Character is Destiny

Integrity Starts With Character

Character is Destiny (CID) helps nations build cultures of integrity by shaping the values and choices of the people within them.

The program equips students, educators, public servants, business leaders, and community members to practice integrity in daily life. It helps people connect what they believe with how they act – at school, at work, in public service, and in their communities.

CID is developed by the Chandler Foundation in partnership with the Maxwell Leadership Foundation. It brings together global leadership experience with a practical, values-based curriculum that can be adapted for local cultures and national priorities.

Rules Alone Cannot Build Integrity

Strong laws and institutions matter. But they are not enough on their own.

A nation’s integrity also depends on the daily choices of its people. It depends on whether students tell the truth, whether leaders serve others, whether officials act with honor, and whether citizens choose courage when integrity is tested.

CID is built on this belief: lasting change begins with character.

The program focuses on integrity because integrity is the foundation of trust. Trust strengthens institutions, supports fair markets, and helps communities flourish.

CID Moves Integrity From Words To Action

CID is not a broad character-education program. It has a clear focus: integrity.

The curriculum helps participants understand the values that shape good decisions. It does not rely only on rules, compliance, or punishment. Instead, it addresses the beliefs and behaviors that guide how people act when no one is watching.

Through facilitated lessons, discussion, reflection, and real-life scenarios, participants learn how to practice integrity in everyday situations.

The program focuses on core values including:

INTEGRITY
HONESTY
TRUST
HONOR
SERVANTHOOD
Courage
Accountability

Local Roots, National Reach

Workshop participants

CID is designed to be launched with local partners.

The Chandler Foundation works with ministries of education, anti-corruption bodies, civil-society organizations, schools, community groups, and business networks to adapt the program for each setting.

This local-partnership model helps ensure the curriculum is relevant, practical, and aligned with national priorities. It also allows the program to begin in selected institutions, learn from the results, and expand over time.

Zambia And Malawi Are Leading The Pilot Stage

CID is being piloted in Zambia and Malawi in partnership with anti-corruption institutions, ministries of education, and other local organizations.

The pilots are testing how the curriculum works in schools and how it can be adapted for wider use. Early engagement shows demand beyond the classroom, including interest from businesses, government agencies, and community groups.

The goal is to build a program that can grow from pilot delivery into national use.

Helping Educators Shape The Next Generation

Teachers and facilitators are central to CID.

They help young people understand that integrity is not an abstract idea. It is a daily practice. It is shown in honesty, respect, responsibility, courage, and service.

As one partner in Zambia said:

“The Zambia Anti-Corruption recognizes the critical role educators play in shaping the moral compass of future leaders. Our vision is to see the 'Character is Destiny' curriculum expand across all schools in Zambia.”

Integrity Creates The Trust That Nations Need

The Chandler Foundation’s Character is Destiny program is grounded in a simple belief: strong nations are built on trust, and trust begins with integrity.

When people act with integrity, institutions become stronger. Public confidence grows. Businesses can operate with greater fairness. Communities can work together with more trust.

CID equips the next generation with the values and habits needed to support high-trust relationships, vibrant marketplaces, and flourishing communities.
